Rebuild A Faucet

Rebuild that older faucet to improve its performance.

If your faucet is old and outdated, or does not perform well anymore, rebuilding it --- rather than replacing it --- is an option. A rebuild will generally improve performance, extending the life of the faucet. If you have experience fixing appliances, this task should take you about an hour to complete. It requires only some basic knowledge and skills, such as handle a wrench and screwdriver. If you are inexperienced, give yourself more than an hour to get the job done.

Instructions

1. Shut off the water valves under the sink in the cabinet.

2. Remove the set screw on the faucet handle. This may require the removal of a small cap first to access the screw. Once you locate it, loosen the screw with an Allen wrench or (on older models) a Phillips-head screwdriver and take the handle off. If it is a double-handle faucet, remove both handles in this manner.

3. Pull out the clip around the faucet head with pliers, or take off the dome cap and cartridge nut (some faucets have a clip, while others have cartridge nuts to secure the cartridge). Pull out the cartridge. If this is a ball valve faucet, lift out the ball valve assembly and lift out the seats and springs. There will be no cartridge.

4. Remove the escutcheon and spout by loosening the nuts under the base of the faucet, and lifting them up and off the base. Remove and replace the O-rings, and then install a new spout and escutcheon. Note: you can skip this step if you just want to rebuild the handle and cartridges.

5. Insert a brand-new cartridge, or replace the old seats and springs with new ones and replace the ball valve. Tighten the cartridge nut and dome cap, or reinsert the retaining clip.

6. Install a new handle by sliding it on the ball valve or cartridge stem and tightening the screw.
