Remove Mazda Tribute Brake Rotors

Remove Mazda Tribute Brake Rotors

The Mazda Tribute is manufactured with a hydraulically actuated caliper and rotor braking system. This system uses spinning rotor material and friction pads to stop the SUV, and these surfaces can wear out and require removal for replacement. The average backyard mechanic can remove the rotors from the Mazda Tribute in about 20 minutes per rotor.

Instructions

1. Raise the Tribute by placing the jack head underneath a frame rail near the brake being worked on, then pumping the lever until the wheel is in the air.

2. Remove the wheel by turning the lug nuts counterclockwise and pulling the wheel from the hub. Set the wheel aside, away from the work area.

3. Remove the caliper by turning the twin rear mount bolts in a counterclockwise direction, then sliding the caliper from the rotor. Unplug the ABS wiring harness from the caliper socket, if applicable. The caliper has the pads embedded onto the caliper pistons, and they can be easily pried out with a screwdriver. Do not allow the caliper to dangle by the brake line, secure it to the control arm with zip ties.

4. Pull the rotor free from the hub, turning the spindle nut counterclockwise if required (4WD). Inspect the rotor for damage and gouging, and have it measured for resurfacing.

5. Replace the rotor with a new unit. Replace the pads, caliper and wheel, then lower the Tribute. Repeat the entire process on the opposite brake assembly.

Tips Warnings

Replace rotors in pairs, front and rear.

Use extreme caution when working underneath a vehicle.
