Repair A Dent On A Steel Door

You can use a little-known trick to remove dents from a steel door.

Steel doors are usually installed for their strength and durability, so they tend to take a lot of abuse, which leads to dents. Before you spend time and money on an appointment with a professional dent repairman, try to remove the dents from the steel door yourself with a trick used to remove dents from steel surfaces in auto body repair. This little-known dent removal technique only takes a few minutes, and will not damage the finish of your steel door.

Instructions

1. Locate the nearest outlet and plug in a hair dryer so that it will reach the door. Use an extension cord if necessary.

2. Aim the hair dryer at the dent so that the dryer is almost touching the door, but not actually making contact.

3. Put on heavy-duty gloves---thick leather or PVC will do. Turn the hair dryer on and run it at its hottest setting for one minute, keeping the air flow focused on the dent. After a minute has passed, turn the hair dryer off.

4. As quickly as possible, holding the air duster upside down, depress the air duster button to coat the dent with liquid CO2.

5. Within a few minutes you should hear a sound as the dent pops out. Use a cloth to clean any leftover liquid CO2 residue, and steel cleaner for the area of the door that you worked on.

Tips Warnings

Depending on how thick the steel door is that you are removing the dent from, you may have to repeat this procedure several times in order to remove the dent.

Use extreme caution when handling CO2. It is a good idea to wear safety glasses so that the liquid CO2 does not splatter into your eyes when you spray it on the dent.
