Side Effects of Magnesium Hydroxide


Magnesium hydroxide is a liquid medication, commonly called milk of magnesia. It is useful for short-term treatment of occasional constipation, heartburn, acid indigestion, and peptic ulcer pain. Magnesium hydroxide relieves constipation within eight hours by causing the colon to retain fluid, thus distending the colon and increasing peristalsis (smooth muscle contractions). The medicine can have some side effects.


Diarrhea


Magnesium hydroxide is a laxative, which means it may cause diarrhea and stomach cramps even when used as directed.


Electrolyte Disturbance


Taking more magnesium hydroxide than directed has the potential to cause the more serious side effects of low potassium levels and abnormally high levels of magnesium. These effects in turn can lead to low blood pressure, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, and respiratory depression. Life-threatening magnesium toxicity can occur when taking magnesium hydroxide but is very unlikely except in people with impaired kidney function.


Allergic Reaction


As with any medication, a severe allergic reaction to magnesium hydroxide may occur. Signs include a rash or hives, breathing problems, tightness in the chest, and facial or mouth swelling.
