Repair A Moen Kitchen Sink Faucet

A dripping Moen faucet may need a new cartridge.

Moen kitchen faucets are a common fixture in homes around the United States. The typical Moen faucet has one or two handles that connect to a cartridge. The cartridge turns inside the faucet and controls the flow of water coming from the faucet. A loose faucet may leak out of the bottom, while one with a faulty cartridge will grind or fail to turn off properly. Whatever the issue, always order replacement parts directly from Moen.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water to the sink using the valve underneath the sink. Turn on the faucet to remove any excess water in the pipes.

2. Loosen the nuts that hold the faucet to the sink. Locate the nuts from underneath the sink and loosen with a wrench.

3. Remove the cover of the faucet handle using the end of a screwdriver. Remove the screw holding it in place using the screwdriver or an allen key depending on the shape of the screw.

4. Remove the plastic pivot stop from the faucet if it is a single handle variety. Also remove the retainer nut by turning it with a wrench and lifting it off. Lift up on the retaining clip that holds the cartridge in place and remove it from the cartridge if you have a double handle faucet variety.

5. Place the cartridge removal tool that comes with your cartridge replacement over the cartridge and wiggle it back and forth using a wrench. This loosens the cartridge. Pull the cartridge out with a pair of pliers. Use a cartridge extractor tool if the cartridge is stuck.

6. Put the new cartridge in place and reassemble the faucet.

Tips Warnings

Bring the old sink parts with you to the hardware store to find the correct replacements for your model.

Place a towel over the drain to prevent small parts from falling into the drain pipes.
