Coleman presidential gas furnace

Coleman Presidential Gas Furnace

Hi, have a problem with a Coleman Presidential Gas Furnace that I can't figure out. Hopefully someone else has an answer. Problem: Pilot Light and Burners will ignite initially, fan comes on blows heat through vents. Burners shut down but blow out pilot. Pilot will relight but as soon as burners shut off again the pilot is blown out. Any thoughts? Thanks. I'm supposing this furnace has an intermittent pilot ignition system that lights the pilot each time the thermostat calls for heat, and shuts it off when the thermostat is satisfied. Is that correct? Ordinarily, the burners would stay lit until the thermostat is satisfied. Are the burners shutting off when the thermostat is satisfied. Is the thermostat short cycling, or is something else such as a pressure switch or limit switch shutting off the burners? No, the pilot is manually lit and should stay lit after the burner shuts down. The burner comes on when called for after I relit the pilot but when the burner shuts off after the demand for heat the pilot also goes out. Take a careful look at the pilot burner flame. It should look like a small blowtorch, with a sharp blue flame. Very likely it's burning more like a candle, with a soft flame susceptible to being blown around--- and out, and with a yellow tipped flame. I'd start by disassembling the pilot burner and cleaning or replacing the pilot orifice. The orifice is held in place by the brass ferrule at the bottom of the pilot burner. Unscrew the ferrule and remove the pilot tubing. The pilot orifice should drop out. If the hole in the orifice is big enough, use the wire from a wire brush to clean it. If it's too small for that, blow it out with some compressed air. Reassemble and try it again.
