Need - Homemade gear puller
A small drive pinion gear on a front wheel axle of my Craftsman II Eager One self-propelled lawn mower is rusted and will not come loose. Any ideas to help free the gear - perhaps a homemade puller? Suggestions as to where to buy a cheap gear puller? The pinion gear is only 2 in diameter. I was thinking about smashing the darn thing and buying an new one for $3.99 at Sears, but every time I pick up a hammer, bad things happen and the cost go up! Thanks in advance. Look in the plumbing dept at you local box store. They have valve stem pullers that will probably do the trick for you. Depending on what tools and supplies you have in your shop and your abilities you may be able to cobble up a reasonable facsimile of a gear puller. I will give that a try during my next attempt. ...... just make sure there aren't any plastic parts that can be damaged by heat transfer. I will delay torching the part. The dirt shield is plastic and will not survive the attempt to heat the gear. Buying a cheap gear puller is a better plan. Great suggestion to include photos. The problem side is obvious. I'm confused, the first picture shows a nice clean gear of some sort to the left of the shaft and the second picture shows a cruddy gear to the right of the shaft. Are these two separate machines? The clean gear is obviously held on its shaft via the snap ring. I'm thinking it's pics of 2 different sides of the mower. I'd souse it good with PB Blaster or CRC and whack it with a hammer, repeating ever so often until it loosened up. Looking from the front of the mower, the clean side is right and the other left. I removed the retainer clip before I started attempting to remove the pinion gear. By the way, the right side is easily disassembled and reassembled. This is what happens when the dust cover fails, the wheel teeth are destroyed and the gear gets no attention. My homemade puller was slipping so I kept modifying it until I got it to grip the gear teeth. A small notch in the fingers did the trick. Parts are ordered. I will soon be attacking the lawn! The photos begins with the good side and end with the wheel damage. I set the puller on the shaft to show how it was connected. Thanks to all who replied to this post.
