Is there a QUIET Sump Check Valve!!!!!!
Hi, Just moved into a new home three weeks ago and have notice the Hico #1107 check valve is really loud. It's a 3700 SF home an I can hear it shutting closed everywhere in the house. The PVC comes up vertically out of the sump pump lid for about six feet and then heads horizontally for 8 feet or so until it hits the exterior wall. Outside of the check valve noise the pump seems to be operating perfectly. As we have guests coming this week-end staying in the basement I want to try to find a quieter one to install. Here are the questions: 1) Does the angle the valve is cut on (ie 33,45,90) make any difference? Someone suggested that 90 degree ones make the most noise. 2) Can you recommend a quiet one??? 3) The check valve is located about a foot up on the PVC pipe coming up vertically out of the sump pump lid. It seems like it should be very easy to replace,is this in fact the case? Thanks so much for any opinions. Cheers, Vance The angle of the check valve won't quiet it down. There will be the same force on the valve when the pump kicks off at any angle. Also some check valves won't function right on angles. Replacing it is as easy as you think. Unplug the pump, take off hose clamps, pull off check valve, get drenched, put on new valve, plug the pump back in. Make sure to put the check valve in the right direction. 1. Most check valse will not operate properly at any angle other than vertical with the flow arrow pointing upward of course. 2. Go to your local plumbing supply store (a Home Depot type store will not carry nor know where to get this) and ask them if they sell Pasco brand check valves. Pasco makes a check valve called the silencer. It has a double check system that is virtually silent. It is available in 1 1/2 and 2. Also if you do not already have a shut off valve in-line above the check valve I recommend getting the one with the shut-off already attached. If they don't carry it ask if they can order it or try another plumbing supply house. 3. The check valve itself is very easy to replace:unplug the pump, if you have a shut-off valve above the check valve turn it off, this will prevent water from back flowing at you, disconnect old check valve, connect new check valve, done.
