Certified bookkeepers work for corporations, schools and other establishments. Their primary responsibility is keeping track of revenue and expenses by entering figures into a general ledger. The general ledger is a financial document that can be kept manually or by computer. It allows managers to track profits each month or quarter. Certified bookkeepers also track payments and payroll expenditures as well as make bank deposits. They must be proficient in math and have high school degrees.


Annual Median Salary


There are several key titles for certified bookkeepers. Financial controllers, a job similar to a bookkeepers, earned the highest median salaries, among those listed, at $39,845 to $90,040 per year, according to 2011 PayScale data. Median salaries appear in the middle of salary lists and can vary somewhat from average salary figures. Assistant controllers earned the second highest median salaries at $38,718 to $74,331 per year. Additionally, head bookkeepers earn annual median salaries between $26,624 and $60,560. Payroll administrators, bookkeepers who specialize in payroll, earn median salaries of $31,188 to $59,016 per year.


Median Salary by Experience


Certified bookkeepers generally earn more as they gain experience. For example, those with less than one year of experience earned annual median salaries of $33,181, according to Payscale. Those with one to four years of experience earned median salaries of $42,189 per year; with five to nine years of experience, they earned median salaries of $46,766 per year. Those with 10 to 19 years of experienced earned annual median salaries of $52,303. And with 20 or more years of experience, these professionals earned median salaries of $53,684 annually.


Median Salary by Industry


Certified bookkeepers' salaries can vary significantly by industry. For example, they earned the highest annual median salaries in the financial services industry, among those listed, at $57,853. They earned the second highest median salaries in the retail and wholesale distribution industry at $55,429 per year. Those in the construction industry earned median salaries of $51,236 per year, and those in real estate property management earned $50,404 per year. Additionally, those in manufacturing and distribution earned annual median salaries of $48,610.


Median Salary by City


Certified bookkeepers earn their highest median salaries, among those listed, in New York City at $62,650 per year, according to Payscale. They earned their second highest median salaries in Los Angeles at $60,327 per year. Those in Miami earned annual median salaries of $50,550, and those in Seattle earned median salaries of $49,634 per year. They earned annual median salaries of $48,605 in Chicago.
