A round ottoman
Decorating your home inexpensively is always a challenge. Creating a slip cover for your round ottoman is an inexpensive alternative to buying a new one or having it done professionally, and it can add color and warmth to your living space. Slip covers provide a custom-made look to your decorating scheme and are a simple solution to adding interest and style to your decor. With your selection of fabrics, sew one or more slip covers for your round ottoman, and create a one-of-a-kind statement piece for your home.
Instructions
1. Measure the diameter of the top of your round ottoman. Lay your fabric flat on your work surface. Measure out a circle using the diameter measurement. Add a 1/2-inch seam allowance all the way around the circle. Cut out the fabric circle.
2. Measure the distance all the way around the sides of your round ottoman. Lay your fabric flat on your work surface. You will create a long rectangle shape. Measure out the long sides of the rectangle using the distance around the sides of your round ottoman. Add a 1 1/2-inch seam allowance.
3. Measure the distance from the top edge of the ottoman to the floor. Add this measurement at a right angle to the long side of the rectangle shape. Add 1 inch for your hem allowance. This is the short side of your rectangle shape. Cut out the fabric rectangle shape.
4. Place the short ends of the fabric rectangle together, right sides in and pin. Sew the short ends of the fabric rectangle, creating a #xBD;-inch seam allowance. Press the seam open.
5. Place the sewn fabric rectangle on your work surface. Fold up the raw edge on one long side of the sewn fabric rectangle. Fold the edge up 1 inch. Pin the folded edges into place. This will form the hem of your round ottoman slipcover.
6. Machine stitch the hem. Press the hem flat.
7. Pin the fabric circle to the sewn fabric rectangle, right sides together. Match the raw edges of the fabric circle and the raw edges of the sewn fabric rectangle. The fabric circle edges should fit inside the edges of the sewn fabric rectangle. Pin all the way around the fabric circle.
8. Sew the fabric circle to the sewn fabric rectangle, creating a 1/2-inch inseam. Press the seam open.
9. Turn your fabric slip cover right side out. Slide the slip cover over your round ottoman. Check the fit.
Tips Warnings
Pin the fabric circle and the sewn rectangle together carefully. Pinning the edges together carefully will aid in the sewing process. Add ruffles, pleats or fabric layers to the sides of your ottoman slip cover. Add edging, lace or other trim to your ottoman slip cover edges.
Remove pins while sewing. Pins can break the sewing machine needle.
