How to start a wedding band

start a wedding band

It's interesting:
"Congratulatory remarks about the wedding ... Wasn't the wedding ceremony beautiful? That row of handsome men and a parade of gorgeous attendants. And ..."

Wedding bands can earn a lot of money for a job they enjoy doing. The bands usually play songs from a wide variety of musical genres because they have such a diverse audience of many ages at weddings. As long as you have the necessary amount of talent and dedication, it's easier than you think to start your own wedding band. Set the ball rolling now and you could soon be earning extra cash with your musical talents.

Instructions

    • 1

Find people who want to be in your wedding band. If you have some musician friends who want to form a group with you, then that's great, but if not you need to start looking for members. Place an ad in the local newspaper and on classified music or gig websites. Visit local music stores and ask them if they have a "musicians wanted" advertising wall -- many stores will let you post advertisements there. Remember to include your email and telephone number so interested parties can contact you.

    • 2

Arrange an audition and ask interested musicians to perform for you. Once you have watched them all perform, decide which musicians you would like to join your wedding band. Remember that you need to find a guitarist, bass player a drummer and a singer -- if you want to play synth-style music, pick a keyboard player too.

    • 3

Think of a name for your band. Make it something catchy that will stick in the minds of potential customers. If you are the kind of wedding band that pays tribute to a particular rock act, then make the name a pun on the name of that act or one of their hits.

    • 4

Pick a list of songs you want to perform at weddings and practice them. Choose popular songs that all ages will know -- it's important to have a style that appeals to the diverse tastes of all the guests at a wedding. It's a good idea to have songs from different decades on the set list -- for example, you could play The Beatles and The Rolling Stones from the 1960s or Madonna and Michael Jackson from the 1980s.

    • 5

Make an ad and put in the the local newspaper and wedding magazines. Post your details on wedding websites and in wedding forums online. Place a copy of your ad in local libraries, cafes and bars and at wedding fairs when they visit your area. On the ad, list your name, contact details and examples of some of the songs you play. If you have any friends who are getting married, offer to play for free, then ask them to write a recommendation and include this on the advertisement.

    • 6

Sign up with a music agency that deals with booking entertainment for weddings. They will represent your band and help you get more work. You can find these advertised in the same places mentioned in Step 5, as well as musician and gig forums online.

    • 7

Wait for the offers to flood in and negotiate a price for your services. As you play more and more weddings, keep promoting yourself and asking the brides and grooms to recommend you to their friends.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Ask wedding venues to recommend you to their customers. Many couples will ask who the venue recommends before looking for their own wedding band.
