What Is The Difference Between A Crepe & An Omelette

Omelets are made of beaten eggs, whereas crepes are made of wheat flour, similar to a flat pancake.


Many different cultures have produced a wide variety of breakfast foods throughout history. Some cultures produce extremely unique breakfast foods. However, due to cultural exchanges over time, some breakfast foods have been adopted by other cultures. This is the case with both crepes and omelettes. In actuality, crepes and omelettes are very different and are made of different ingredients.


History of Crepes


Crepes can be traced back to the pancake, which is basically a flat piece of unleavened bread. Crepes and their analogs can be found throughout Europe under different names. The word crepe is a French word that means crisp, due to the very thin nature of the crepe compared to a pancake. In the 1930s, a French chef introduced crepes to America.


What Is a Crepe?


A crepe is a very thin pancake made of wheat flour. Batter is poured into a hot frying pan that has a trace of butter on it. A variety of fillings can be used, either savory like cheese, or sweet like fruit. Crepes are often rolled up before being served.


History of the Omelette


Although the word omelette is of French origin, historians believe omelettes were first made in ancient Persia. The modern omelette emerged in the mid 16th century in France, and there are records of complex recipes. Other similar dishes were present in ancient Britain as well as Rome.


What Is an Omelette?


Omelettes are egg dishes made by beating whole eggs and cooking them in a frying pan with oil or butter. They can be plain or served with a variety of savory fillings, such as meats, vegetables and cheese.
