Design Tips To Brighten A Room On A Budget

Certain changes can brighten your room.

Light, bright and spacious is what makes a room inviting. Yet so many people are living in the dark. Dark curtains, dark furniture, dark flooring, dark everything can make a room gloomy.

Redecorating a room doesn't have to be expensive, and you don't necessarily need to replace the furniture. Certain home decorating ideas will help you lighten and brighten your living spaces without spending much money.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls a light shade.

2. Paint the trim. Classic white or off white on the windows, molding and baseboards will definitely bring some light into the room. If your trim is stained wood, consider refinishing in a lighter color. This may take some work to remove a dark stain, but it is not expensive, and is a project you can most likely do yourself.

3. Redesign your window treatments in fabrics of solid, light colors. The treatment should use simple lines, sans ruffles and ornate valances to help the room to appear fluid.

4. Clean your windows. They shine more and let more light in.

5. Lighten up the floor. Light-colored, natural-fiber home decor rugs can be laid on top of existing carpet or dark wood flooring. Wood floors can also be polished to a shine that will reflect some of the light in the room.

6. Accessorize with restraint. If you have dark upholstered furniture, buy some lighter-colored throw pillows. Wall decor should be uncluttered and coordinate with the colors in your room. Avoid yellow metals like brass or bronze. Keep the mantle arrangements simple.

7. Remove the clutter. Knickknacks all over the room are definitely a thing of the past and can make a small space seem smaller and darker. If you just can't bear to part with your little treasures, select a few to display at a time, and then rotate your accessories throughout the year.

8. Keep the room clean. Dust and dirt will actually make a room appear smaller. Polished, clean furniture and clean floors will reflect light and add to the brightness of the room.

9. Place mirrors throughout the room to reflect light and add a feeling of airiness.
