Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day Activities

It is hard to resist the perfecty poppable Bubble Wrap.

Bubble Wrap, made by Sealed Air Corp., is nearly as renowned for its popping sound as it is for its use as a packaging material. Many consumers can't help popping the little plastic bubbles for amusement. Bubble Wrap was invented by accident in 1957 as the byproduct of a failed attempt at wallpaper, according to the National Museum of Education. In 2001, a Bloomington, Indiana radio station, Spirit 95 Radio, started Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. It is held annually on January 25.

Bubble Wrap Disco

Some people celebrate Bubble Wrap Day by cranking up the music and busting a move on a popping dance floor. You will need a few yards of Bubble Wrap and masking or painter's tape. Roll out the wrap on the floor and secure the edges with tape, making sure it remains as flat as possible to avoid slipping. Turn on the tunes or groove to the soundtrack in your head. Keep dancing until you pop every bubble.

Bubble Wrap Fashion Show

Show your creative side and flair for fashion by creating dresses, suits or swimwear out of Bubble Wrap. Break up in teams or work as individuals within a set time frame. You will need yards of Bubble Wrap (available in clear or bright colors), tape and scissors. Designers should have a few minutes to sketch a design before they begin cutting and assembling. After time is called, models can walk on a runway of Bubble Wrap before a panel of judges. Award the top three designs, or give prizes for Most Creative or Most Fashionable.

Fastest Popper

You will need a stopwatch or timer for this contest. The object of the game is to see who can pop all the bubbles the fastest. Cut out one 6-inch square of Bubble Wrap for each participant. Bubbles must be popped individually--players can't twist the wrap for multiple pops. Give the winners Bubble Wrap ribbons.

Art Contest

See how creative your friends and coworkers are by hosting a Bubble Wrap art contest. Give contestants an adequate time frame (at least a week) to conceptualize and create their pieces. The final creations should contain at least 80 percent Bubble Wrap. Set up a gallery-like display for the art pieces and have guests judge the works during a Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day luncheon or party.
