How to paper piece log cabins

It's interesting:
"This wedding takes place during a week when the web is all astir over ... 4-Feb-201There's nothing like a wedding around Valentine's Day."

Teaching early American history can sometimes be dry and uninteresting. Luckily, you can make learning history more enjoyable by supplementing your curriculum with an educational hands-on craft, such as making a rolled-paper log cabin. Even little children can successfully create a cabin. Everything required to make a rolled paper log cabin can be purchased at an office-supply or craft store.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard, 12 inches by 12 inches
  • Brown construction paper cut into 22 pieces, 3 inches by 2 inches
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue

Instructions

    • 1

Tape the papers after you've rolled them into "logs."

Roll a 3-inch-by-2-inch piece of construction paper lengthwise, and tape the side to hold it in place. Repeat this process until you have 20 rolls of construction paper. Place one of the rolls about in the middle of the 12-by-12 piece of cardboard, and glue it into place with craft glue. Place another roll so that the end of it is flush with the inside of the first roll, and glue it onto place. Repeat this process until you have created a square frame on the cardboard base.

    • 2

      Stack the rolls.

Place a construction paper roll on one of the rolls on the frame and glue it down. Continue around the frame, adding the rolled pieces until your next row is complete. Repeat this entire process until you have glued down a total of 20 rolled paper logs, and build up all four walls of the paper piece log cabin.

    • 3

Two flat pieces of brown paper form the roof.

Squeeze a line of glue along one side of another piece of construction paper. Place the last piece of construction paper on top of it, and allow the glue to dry completely. Opened out, these two pieces will form the cabin's roof. Squeeze a line of glue along the bottom edge of each piece of paper, and place the edges on two opposing walls of your cabin. Use your fingers to press and hold the paper in place until the glue is dry enough to hold them there independently. Your paper piece log home is now complete.
