1. What Is Rockabilly?

   • For the uninitiated, rockabilly culture can be difficult to understand. The rockabilly wave began in the late 1950s, when young up and comers like Elvis and Johnny Cash were laying roots on the music scene. Rockabilly combines bits of country and bluegrass for twang with rock music for a youthful, unique vibe. Rockabilly enthusiasts drove fast cars, listened to their music loud, and dressed with a bit of rebellious risqué--ness that was unique and exciting.

   Rockin' Attire

   • Rockabilly wedding wear must be edgy and stylish. The wedding gown should be more flapper and less southern belle, with shorter hems and flowing, frilly skirts. The bride can cut loose and add plenty of color and flare to her outfit, with red or other bright heels bringing the perfect bit of pop to the ensemble. The groom should show his funky side, with embroidered denim shirts and dark, starched jeans displaying the rebel vibe of the rockabilly era.

   The Ceremony

   • The ceremony may be the most traditional part of the entire wedding, but it can be a rockin’- part of the festivities. Strut down the aisle to a non-traditional song, and shake your groove thang as you make your way up to the altar. Write your own vows, infusing your promise to each other with slang from the era, such as “-daddy-o,”- “-chickie”- and “-square.”- Decorate the hall with shiny metallic streamers and old 45 records to infuse the room with rockabilly flare.

   Rock the Reception

   • Let loose at the reception and get your party on. Hire a rockabilly band, or ask your DJ to compile a large selection of vintage rockabilly music. Cover the tables with black and white checkerboard tablecloths, and serve a selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from diner-style glasses. Rent a vintage photo booth for guests to commemorate the special occasion, or put a Polaroid camera on the gift table and have guests take photos of themselves for your wedding album. Serve cupcakes instead of a large wedding cake, and set up a sundae station at the cake table to add an authentic ice cream social to your rockabilly wedding.
