A bride's hairstyle on her wedding day should bring out her natural beauty while still making her look as special and stylish. Brides with long hair have a vast variety of wedding hair options available to them, from elaborate updos to wearing it down with a flower pinned in one side. Ponytails may not seem formal enough for a wedding day, but there are ways to dress up a ponytail to create a sophisticated bridal look. Ponytail hairstyles are also easy to create, so they can be done at home without the help of a professional.

Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Side Ponytail

    • Wear long hair swept into an elegant side ponytail. Work a curl enhancing product through the lower half of the hair. Use a curling iron with a large barrel to create big curls. Comb the hair to one side and create a deep side part and comb the rest of the hair back. Sweep the curls to the opposite side of the part. Secure the hair to the side with an elastic band, a jeweled barrette or several bobby pins. You can play with the placement of the pony tail, whether higher on the head or lower, to your liking. Use hairspray with extra-hold to secure hair all day. Add a tiara or bridal headband to complete the look.

    Classic with Curls

    • Style hair in a classic ponytail, but add some flair to it with flowing curls. Apply smoothing creme through the hair. Comb all of the hair back into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic band that is similar to the hair color or clear. Take a large-barreled curling iron and create bouncing curls throughout the hair. Apply some hairspray to keep the look in place all day. Add some jeweled bobby pins or barrettes to the front of the hair for some extra sparkle or wrap and tie a bridal headband on top.

    Braided Ponytail

    • A long, braided ponytail is a look that comes from East Indian brides and works best with very long hair. Apply styling creme throughout hair, and use a comb to create a deep side part. Comb all of the hair back, and secure it in a ponytail with an elastic band. Separate the ponytail into three equal pieces and braid it, leaving about four inches of hair at the bottom. Secure the braided hair with another elastic band at the base of the braid. Spray hair with extra-hold hairspray to keep the braid in place for the whole wedding day.

    Twisted Side Ponytail

    • Create a variation of the classic side ponytail by adding a twist to the front. Apply a volumizing foam or mousse throughout the hair and comb hair into a deep side part. Gather a large strand of hair in the front on the opposite side of the part. Twist the section of hair, loosely at first, toward the back of the ear, then twist it tightly as you near the back of the neck. Hold the twist in place while gathering the rest of the hair to that side to create a side ponytail. Secure hair with an elastic band and pin loose strands using bobby pins. Curl the ponytail with a 1-inch curling iron. Wrap a small strand of hair around the elastic band and secure it with bobby pins to achieve a more sophisticated look. Spray with extra-hold hairspray.
