make a simple tres leches cake

It's interesting:
"Ellen told Keith that by their wedding day she wanted him to have the body of an Olympic swimmer. She was thinking of Michael Phelps, but from ..."

Tres leches cake, which literally means "-three milks cake,"- is a very popular dessert in Latin America. While making one at home can be complicated if you want it from scratch, if you don't mind cheating a little, you can make a tasty version using a basic cake mix.

Add this to my Recipe Box.

Things You'll Need

  • White or yellow cake mix
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup rum (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Fruit (optional)
  • Nuts
  • Fork

Instructions

    • 1

Bake the cake as directed on the package.

    • 2

Combine the milks and the cream. You also can add the rum if you like.

    • 3

Once the cake has finished baking, allow it to cool for five to 10 minutes.

    • 4

Poke holes throughout the cake with a fork.

    • 5

Pour the milk mixture over the cake as evenly as possible.

    • 6

Place the cake in the refrigerator and let the it soak in the milk mixture.

    • 7

Top the cake with whipped cream before serving. You also can add fruit and nuts as toppings.

Tips &- Warnings

  • If heavy whipping cream is too heavy, use half-and-half or whole milk.

  • Suggested fruits to top the cake include cherries, pineapples, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries.

  • Don't poke too many holes in the cake. You don't want it to be a crumbly, mushy mess.
