How to make zebra stripes on cupcakes using white icing

make zebra stripes on cupcakes using white icing

It's interesting:
"The best way to get a wedding reception crowd on side is too say something nice about the bride ... You could also add that it's been a wonderful wedding so far."

Thinking of new ideas for children's birthday parties can be difficult, but a jungle-themed party is rarely unappreciated. Very young children and young teenagers alike are fascinated by the exotic animals, so you can't go far wrong basing a party on this theme. Jungle animal cupcakes are a great addition to any jungle-themed party, and with a little food-coloring and some imagination, you can soon have an assortment of jungle favorites. An animal that can't go unrepresented at a jungle-themed party is the zebra, so make sure you include plenty of zebra cupcakes for the kids.

Things You'll Need

  • Small bowl of chocolate frosting
  • Black food coloring
  • Sheet of white fondant icing
  • Rolling pin
  • Small sharp knife
  • Large flat metal spatula or wide knife
  • Deep mug of just boiled water

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a small bowl of chocolate frosting with black food coloring to make the base coat of the zebra print.

    • 2

Ice half a dozen or so of your cupcakes with the black frosting. Put it on as flat and even as you can. Some imperfections can be difficult to remove, and you can make the problem worse in your attempts to fix it. Rather than poke and scrape at the frosting on the cake, dip a large, flat metal spatula or wide knife in very hot water and run it across the surface of the frosting to smooth it out. Leave the cupcakes until the black frosting is dry and set.

    • 3

Roll out a thin piece of white fondant icing and cut out the white stripes to go on top of the black base.

    • 4

Place the white fondant icing on the cupcake. Zebra stripes are not regular, and while some will be roughly the same width all the way across the cake, others will narrow, taper and come to an end, while others will split into two and continue. A white line that has tapered and come to an end will fit in between the v-shape made where another white line has split into two. There will always be black in between the white lines.

    • 5

Run the very hot, wet spatula or knife quickly across the top of each cake to smooth the edges of the white icing down to the level of the black, giving the stripes a seamless look.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Other jungle animal cupcakes you can make are tigers, monkeys and lions. If you're feeling really creative, you could attempt to add faces and tails to some of them by sticking on candy pieces and piping on a tail or adding a cut-out fondant icing tail. A jungle fancy-dress code and face-painting session will help bring the whole jungle-themed party together.
