Symbolic christian wedding activities

Many of the common activities at weddings are rooted in Christian symbolism. They are often traditions that can be dated back hundreds of years, symbolizing certain aspects of the marriage, such as the purity of the bride, becoming one in the flesh, and joining in a union that will be fruitful and prosperous.

1. Corinthians

   • Bible passages are often read at Christian weddings to help put the marriage in the context of the faith. Often called the Love Chapter, 1 Corinthians 13 is sometimes read aloud by either the pastor or the couple, to relate what the Bible has to say about the importance of love. The couple can read this passage together or alternate verses, symbolizing their commitment and indicating that they are both entering the marriage with the same ideas about the concept and predominance of love.

   Cutting the Cake

   • It is also common for a couple to cut the wedding cake together and feed it to each other. Although this tradition has had several meanings through history, for Christians it symbolizes becoming one in the flesh. The new husband puts his hand over his wife's to cut the first slice, symbolizing that they are joining together as a single person. Ephesians 5:31 may also be read, which states "-For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”-

   Pre-Wedding Counselling

   • One activity that can be both practical and symbolic is to enroll in pre-wedding Christian counseling. Holding meetings with a spiritual adviser deepens the couple's commitment to a wholesome, faithful marriage and help prepare them for the road ahead. A counselor will help point out what it means to be in a Christian relationship and how it is different from other marriages. They will be advised on firmly base their relationship with God at the center and instructed on the expectations of a Christian couple.

   Cord of Three Strands

   • Some Christian couples may choose in incorporate the Cord of Three Strands. This is based on Ephesians 4:12, suggesting that "-Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."- At some point in the ceremony the couple braids together a gold strand, purple strand and white strand. The gold strand symbolizes God, the purple strand the groom and the white cord the bride.
