Costume ideas for famous couples in history
It's interesting:"I remember the last wedding I went to. It was in the function room of the Tate Gallery. The groom got plastered and ended up with red wine, gravy ..."
While many couples are famous in their own small circle, others attract the notice and attention of the nation and the world. The next time you and your significant other attend a costume party, you can choose a famous couple to impersonate.
Does this Spark an idea?
Royal Couples
There's nothing like a royal couple to make others sit up and take notice. Attend the party as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. This works especially well if one of you is a portly man with reddish hair and a beard, however, padding and false facial hair will do the trick as well. Another option is Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee, and the Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, who abdicated the throne as the King of England for the woman he loved. Study photos of the couple, and opt for hairstyles and clothing from the late 1930s when this couple were in their heyday.
Political Couples
Political power couples have appeared from time to time throughout American history. Dress as Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd. Period clothing from the Civil War era is appropriate, as is a beard for Abe. Alternatively, dress as George and Martha Washington. A white wig, knee breeches and a long coat will complete George's costume. Martha requires a Colonial-style dress, cap and shawl, reminiscent of the era. Be sure to conduct yourself with the dignity befitting the first President and First Lady of the United States.
Biblical Couples
The fame of Biblical couples has stood the test of time. Everyone will recognize you as Adam and Eve when you dress in flesh-colored leotards and tights adorned with strategically placed fig leaves. Have Adam carry a rubber snake to represent the serpent from the Garden of Eden and ensure that Eve has her apple polished and ready to offer to all who are tempted. Samson and Delilah are another Biblical couple that is easily recognized. Samson's long, flowing locks and tunic are an easy costume to create. Implement chains to reflect his time spent in slavery. Gold jewelry, a revealing, low-cut gown, tousled hair and exotic makeup offers a way for Delilah to show her physical beauty and tempting nature.
Musical Couples
Throughout history there has been more than one famous couple that made beautiful music together. Dress as John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Opt for garb from the 1960s and '70s. Wear love beads, let your hair flow long and loose and wear round eyeglasses like those that were popular at the time. A shorter man and taller woman make a perfect Sonny and Cher. A long, black wig and a midriff-baring outfit will make it obvious that you're Cher. Don't forget to wear dangling earrings and toss your hair often.
