Backdrops for a nonreligious wedding ceremony

Backdrops for a non-religious wedding ceremony

It's interesting:
"Linda and I first met about 18 months ago, when it quickly became clear to me that here was a woman of many attributes - beauty, brains, wisdom and, fortunately for Paul, a disarming love for dumb animals."

Non-religious wedding ceremonies typically have more flexibility in decorating or choosing a background, as religious ceremonies usually take place in a house of worship. Your ceremony background can be as simple or elaborate as you choose, depending on your budget and the style of your wedding. An overly-elaborate background will look out of place at a somewhat casual wedding, whereas a casual or plain background will look odd at a formal and elaborate affair.

  1. Nature

    • Outdoor weddings can take advantage of the natural backdrop near the location of the event, whether it be an ocean, lake or river or a forest, garden or field. Very little added decor, or nothing beyond the great outdoors at all, can lend a natural feeling to your wedding ceremony, particularly if your theme or style is more low-key.

Dress up any indoor room with a few touches of nature if an outdoor ceremony is not an option. For example, set large urns with potted plants or tall pillars with floral arrangements on either side of your altar. Large floor vases or pots can hold tree branches -- spray painted to match your wedding colors or unadorned. Decorate the branches with small details that complement your wedding theme, location or style, such as crystals, lights or silk flower petals.

    Arch

    • An arch can be built for your wedding or rented from party or wedding vendors. There are various styles and sizes that can complement your wedding, such as a basic metal arch you can decorate with flowers, lights, fabric or items that complement the theme of your wedding, or a lattice arch that dresses up a garden or gazebo area. Balloon arches come in various shapes, such as a heart- or circular-shape, and almost any color imaginable. Wrought iron and wood are other common materials for wedding ceremony arches.

    Fabric or Material

    • Drape fabric or material behind your altar to set the mood and provide an attractive background for your nuptials. Fancy drapes, yards upon yards of tulle or silk fabric can hang from the ceiling behind you. Use beaded curtains if you want something unusual or fancy. Alternatively, create your own setting for a themed wedding. For example, hang strings of seashells behind your altar if you want a beach-themed wedding in Nebraska. Set any scene you want with painted canvases or portrait backgrounds. Purchase a ready-made background or create your own, such as a painting of a castle, mote and horses with a carriage in a distance for a fairy tale wedding. You may even choose to rent a prom picture background from a party store or photographer if you want a ready-made background that will look attractive in your pictures.

    Small Details

    • Use small details for a simple background, or combine various smaller details to create the background you would like to stand before. Use a variety of flowers, whether your budget allows for elaborate fresh flower arrangements or a mass of silk flowers you arrange on your own. Candles can also create a romantic backdrop. Use lights to add some spark to your ceremony, whether you opt for simple miniature twinkling white lights, novelty strings of lights or colorful paper lanterns strung above your altar. Make origami shapes, such as paper cranes, to hang on strings behind and around your altar. This can even turn into a bonding do-it-yourself project for you and your fiance or other members of your families and wedding party.
