Anniversary getaways in michigan

Anniversary getaways in michigan

It's interesting:
"My first impression of Linda was that she was such a beautiful, witty, charming, clever, friendly and thoughtful person. And when she agreed to marry Paul, it totally proved to me that old adage – opposites really do attract."

All year round, couples celebrate their anniversaries in ways that are meaningful to them. Flowers, cards, chocolate and jewelry are among the tangible gifts that may be exchanged- however, some couples prefer the gift of time spent together and the memories of an anniversary getaway. The state of Michigan offers destinations from the romantic to the historic to the quaint, offering anniversary vacation options to suit a variety of tastes and interests.

  1. Mackinac Island

    • Mackinac Island, near the northeastern tip of the Michigan glove, is a destination for couples looking to celebrate their anniversary with class. Approximately 4 square miles in size, the island is only reachable by ferry, small airplane or snowmobile during the winter months. Once on the island, you can find accommodations at the local inns or resorts or the fabled Grand Hotel. Opened in 1887, the Grand Hotel houses 385 guest rooms, each one unique in decor. Mackinac Island hosts events throughout the year- winter fests, the annual St. Patrick's Day dinner, Independence Day festivities or horse shows are a few of the attractions that can be enjoyed by visitors. Horse-drawn carriages, saddled horses and bicycles allow guests to explore and take in the island's picturesque views.

    Detroit

    • For lovers of music, art, history and food, Detroit, also known as the Motor City, is an out-of-the-ordinary destination for an anniversary getaway in Michigan. Lavish accommodations within the city include hotels adjoined with the city's three casinos--the Greektown Casino-Hotel, the MGM Grand Detroit and the MotorCity Casino Hotel--or the world-famous Renaissance Center, which provides dazzling views of Detroit, the Detroit River and the Canadian border.

Founded in 1701, Detroit has seen its fair share of history, which can be explored in the city's museums. Music lovers will want a peek at the Motown Historical Museum, which traces the history of the record label that launched the careers of acts like Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder. Art buffs should check out the Detroit Institute of Arts, which showcases over 100 galleries of internationally known works of art, as well as the neighboring Detroit Historical Museum, which houses archives of the region's history.

The downtown area has begun to see a recent revival, and there are hundreds of notable restaurants tucked within the city limits. Slows Bar-B-Q, for example, was featured on the Travel Channel's "Man v. Food" in 2009 and named one of America's best barbecue joints by "Budget Travel" in 2010.

    Petoskey

    • If you want a quiet, low-key Michigan getaway for your anniversary, Petoskey is just the spot. Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, this tiny community of 6 square miles has been mentioned in the book "The 100 Best Small Towns in America," as noted on the city's official website. Petoskey is home to numerous hotels, bed and breakfasts and resorts scattered within the city and in the surrounding area, as well as plenty of local entertainment. Big Bear Adventure provides outdoor activities such as river trips and mini-golf. The Pleasantview Winery offers "a taste of up north," according to their slogan, featuring a bounty of Michigan wines to taste and buy. The Odawa Casino Resort offers the excitement of gaming and entertainment and the luxurious amenities of the Odawa Hotel. The assortment of attractions is diverse and plentiful in this small northern Michigan town.
