How to word thank yous in a wedding program

word thank yous in a wedding program

It's interesting:
"After all, this wedding has given me the opportunity to meet many of Paul's ... And I hope, when they look back years from now on this, their wedding day, they ..."

The wedding program provides your guest with a list of who is in the wedding party and the order of the wedding ceremony. In addition, a portion of the wedding program allows the bride and groom to give heartfelt thanks to friends and family for attending the wedding and providing support. While the etiquette for wording a thank you in a wedding program is not clear, both the bride and groom must feel the language reflects their emotions, personality as a couple and manner of speaking.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the thank you personal. Do not use overly formal language or phrases that do not sound natural to the bride or groom's personality. If you would not say it in a conversation, do not use it.

    • 2

Refer to people by name and use any honorifics, such as aunt, uncle or best friend. Only thank groups of people if otherwise named in the wedding program, such as bridesmaids, groomsmen or parents.

    • 3

Remember to thank guests, friends or relatives "from both of us." Unless the groom specifically thanks his uncle for his support in the absence of his father or the bride thanks a bridesmaid for her counsel during the planning of the wedding, all thanks should come from "we" and "us." Keep in mind the wedding ceremony joins two into one and the thank yous on a wedding program are the first expression of your life together.

    • 4

Consider the length of each thank you. Some people become jealous if their thank you is shorter than someone else's thank you. It is a sad but true fact of weddings. Thank everyone equally. If you feel that one person deserves more praise than space allows, write a personal thank you note and deliver it by hand during the reception.

    • 5

Do not thank people for gifts or money. However, there are exceptions. Thank a family member or friend for donating her wedding dress or his tuxedo. Thank anyone who helped make the wedding possible by purchasing flowers, arranging the venue or making bridesmaids dresses, but do not include how much she spent.

    • 6

Avoid using inside jokes or slang when wording a thank you. Keep the language formal and sincere. Save comments only the recipient will understand for a separate thank you note delivered to him.

    • 7

Copy thank yous from a book. When all else fails, find a sample wedding thank you from a wedding etiquette book or website, such as Planning the Perfect Wedding Day. Feel free to adjust language or add names to make the sentiment personal.
