How to sew a chuppah

sew a chuppah

It's interesting:
"The best way to get a wedding reception crowd on side is too say something nice about the bride ... You could also add that it's been a wonderful wedding so far."

A chuppah is the cloth canopy used during a Jewish wedding ceremony. The chuppah represents the home that the newlyweds will create together. Many couples choose to use a homemade chuppah that is stitched by hand and either stretched over a structure or held by members of the wedding party.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Cloth
  • Fabric scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Choose fabric for the chuppah. While traditional weddings have white chuppahs, you can also experiment with printed or textured cloth that coordinates with the wedding theme. Keep in mind that thin or delicate fabrics such as silk or chiffon are more difficult to sew.

    • 2

Measure and trim the cloth using the fabric scissors. Since fabric scissors are specially designed to cut cloth, you will minimize fray. Most chuppah frames will fit about six square feet of fabric. Always measure a few inches beyond the final product to allow for the hem.

    • 3

Sew an even hemline on the trim of the fabric. You can sew the chuppah by hand or using a sewing machine. Cut a button-sized slit in each corner to allow room for the screws that will attach the fabric to the chuppah frame.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Make sure the thread is the same color as the fabric that you are using for the chuppah.
