Flushing is in the New York City Borough of Queens, which lies to the west of Manhattan. One notable Flushing landmark is the Flushing Meadows Corona Park, which covers 1,255 acres and includes the 93-acre manmade Meadow Lake where boat-hire is available. The Flushing River flows into this tidal bay. Flushing may not be number one on most tourists' lists of places to visit in New York, but it does have a several attractions and things to do.

1. Queens Botanical Garden

   • Laid out over 39 acres, the Queens Botanical Garden comprises a large number of different habitats and planting styles. The Bee Garden has a collection of bee-friendly plants and trees, which are noted for the flavor they give to honey. Italian and Caucasian bees populate the beehives there. The Cherry Garden has an array of cherry tree varieties- visit in the spring for spectacular blossom displays, or in the late summer to sample the fruit. The Herb Garden features a diverse collection of herbs from around the world, including Asian varieties and herbs used by Native Americans for healing as well as cooking. The garden is open throughout the year, but closed on Mondays and legal holidays.

   New York Hall of Science

   • The New York Hall of Science combines permanent exhibitions with visiting events- the permanent exhibitions include 450 hands-on exhibits organized by theme. The Microbial Zoo allows visitors to explore the fascinating hidden world of microbes through special high-powered microscopes. The Rocket Park features some of the actual craft that have been involved in space exploration, many dating from the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Charles and Ray Eames designed the museum's Mathematica exhibition for IBM in 1961. By combining models and hands-on exhibits, Mathematica explores how mathematics underpins all science and is essential to art, architecture and music. The Hall of Science is open throughout the year, but closed on Mondays from September to March and on Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

   Fishing on Flushing Bay

   • Flushing has an urban setting, but that doesn't mean it's not a place to go fishing. It is perfectly possible to do so in Flushing Bay, although it's somewhat dominated by LaGuardia Airport. Try your luck on Flushing Bay Promenade, many anglers fish near the World's Fair Marina. The Bay is home to striped bass and blue claw crabs. Other fishermen favor the end of the promenade adjacent to the airport. There are few amenities in this part of Flushing, though a donut outlet is available for hungry anglers. Flushing Bay Promenade is also well used by cyclists, skaters and joggers and it's a good place to spot New York birdlife.
