A tiered cake decorated with fondant can provide a stunning centerpiece for a large celebration. Fondant is a pliable icing that resembles modeling clay and can be rolled out and draped over cake layers to create a smooth finish. Cover each cake tier with fondant and smooth the fondant into place before you attempt to assemble the cake. You can decorate the cakes at this time as well or wait until the cake has been assembled to add any finishing touches.

Things You'll Need

  • Cake boards
  • Scissors
  • Wooden dowels
  • Knife

Instructions

      Place each decorated tier of the cake onto a cardboard cake board of the same size. You may need to cut the cake boards to the correct size with scissors.

      Insert one long wooden dowel straight down into the center of the bottom tier of the cake until it touches the supporting cake board. Use a knife to mark the dowel where it exits the top of the cake.

      Pull the dowel out of the cake and cut the dowel at the mark. Cut several more dowels to the exact same size using the first dowel as a guide. You will need approximately six dowels for each cake tier with a 10-inch diameter or less and eight dowels for cakes with a diameter larger than 10 inches.

      Cut additional cardboard cake boards to the same size as all of the tiers, excluding the bottom tier. These will be used to determine the proper placement of dowel rods to provide support for each tier of the fondant covered cake.

      Press a cake board that is the same size as the tier directly above into the center of each decorated cake tier. This creates an outline in the fondant.

      Insert the dowel rods you cut earlier into each cake tier. Space the dowels evenly and keep them approximately 1-1/2 inches inside the outline you created with the cake board.

      Stack the cake tiers on top of each other with the largest cake on the bottom and the smallest cake on top. Leave the cake boards underneath each tier in place to ensure that the cake is stable.

      Sharpen one end of a long wooden dowel with a knife and push it down through the center of the assembled cake. The dowel will need to be pushed through each cake layer and the cake boards beneath them to provide additional stability.
