When visiting Southern California, it is very difficult to run out of places to go and see. The area offers a host of attractions, including amusement parks, museums, movie and television studios, beaches and zoos. Visiting all the attractions that Southern California has to offer would be a massive undertaking, so if that is your intent, you'd better plan on several return trips.

  1. Amusement Parks

    • Southern California's major amusement park lineup includes Disneyland and California Adventure in Anaheim, Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Universal Studios Hollywood in Universal City, Sea World in San Diego and Legoland in Carlsbad. Several smaller amusement parks are located in various cities, including Castle Park in Riverside and Pacific Park on the pier in Santa Monica. If it's water amusement you're looking for, check out the area's water-park lineup which includes Raging Waters in San Dimas, Soak City at Knott's Berry Farm, White Water Canyon in San Diego, Wild Rivers in Irvine and The Wave Water Park in Vista.

    Beaches

    • From Santa Barbara to San Diego, and all beaches in between, Southern California offers a long list of beaches that include a variety of activities. These year-around sandy playgrounds are ideal for surfing, sunbathing, swimming, sailing or just for looking. Water temperatures during the summer rarely exceed 70 degrees, while winter water temps normally stay above 57 degrees. Average beach high air temps range from 76 degrees in the summer to 69 during the winter, while night temps dip to 68 in the summer and 56 in the winter. Popular Southern California beaches include Malibu, Santa Monica, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, San Clemente, Mission Beach and Imperial Beach. Do not restrict your choice to the beaches listed here- the area is all about beaches, so look around!

    Museums

    • Southern California offers several types of museums, including art, historical, science and cultural. From Los Angeles County's Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena and the Museum of Television and Radioin Beverly Hills to San Diego's Museum of Contemporary Art and the Mingei International Museum, you're sure to find a museum that meets your interests. Southern California is also home to two presidential libraries: The Richard M. Nixon library in Yorba Linda and the Ronald Reagan library in Simi Valley.

    Movie and TV Studios

    • As of 2011, there are more than 12 movie studios in Southern California, including Fox, Warner Bros., Paramount and Columbia. There are several television studios in the region as well, including the ABC Television Center, NBC Studios and CBS TV City. Almost all of the movie and television studios are located in Hollywood and surrounding cities, and most offer public tours. It's not uncommon to visit a movie or TV studio and see a celebrity showing up for work.
