Marriage licences in pennsylvania

Marriage licences in pennsylvania

It's interesting:
"Linda’s been the driving factor when it came to planning this wedding, and Linda, it was perfect! All your hard work paid off, and I must say I’m honoured to be part of the only 5 minutes that you didn’t get to plan!"

Marriage licenses are an essential part of the wedding process. The license allows the state to record the marriage, making it official. Knowing the requirements for a marriage license in Pennsylvania makes the process simple and easy.

  1. Application

    • Visit your local county courthouse at least three days prior to your wedding date. Pennsylvania requires three days between the date of application and the date of issuance. Other application requirements include appearing together to fill out your application. If you show up separately you will not be allowed to apply for a marriage license. Out of state residents may marry in Pennsylvania by applying for a marriage license in the county where the marriage will take place.

    Documents

    • To apply for a marriage license you must have appropriate forms of identification. You must both present valid photo identification in the form of a driver's license, state ID card or passport, and you must know your social security number when applying for your marriage license. If either party was previously married, Pennsylvania requires you present a copy of the divorce decree or death certificate issued upon the dissolution of your previous marriage.

    Age

    • The State of Pennsylvania issues age restrictions in regard to marriage licenses. Both parties must be 18 years of age at minimum. Anyone younger than 18 is required to have parents or legal guardians present when applying for a marriage license because parental consent is required in the form of a signature on the marriage license. Persons age 15 and younger are required to obtain a court order granting permission to wed.

    Other Considerations

    • Blood tests and premarital counseling are not requirements for a marriage license in Pennsylvania. The cost of a Pennsylvania marriage license is dependent on the county where you apply for your license as are the accepted methods of payment. Some counties provide online marriage license applications you can print and fill out prior to appearing in person to present the license, which further speeds up the process. When picking up your marriage license after the three day waiting period you are not required to appear together.
