A wedding is a very special time in a young woman's life. With so many details to take care of, the planning process can become quite a whirlwind. If one of your sisters or good friends gets married, you may be asked to be the maid of honor. This is a very special role. You will be responsible for helping out with different details such as the bridal shower and the bachelorette party. On the wedding day you will be responsible for giving a speech to honor the bride and groom.

Instructions

    • 1

Start preparing the speech well in advance. As the wedding day draws nearer, you may be surprised by how busy you become in helping the bride prepare for her special day. You do not want to wait until the last minute and quickly put together a speech that does not fully capture the sentiments you feel towards your friend. If you are nervous about standing in front of people you will also want extra time to practice. Sit down with a pad and pen and start brainstorming different items to include in your speech as soon as the bride asks you to be her maid of honor.

    • 2

Discuss the speech with the bride. Depending on how particular the bride to be is, she may have certain elements that she wants you to include in your speech. She may be hoping you'll share some funny anecdotes about how she and the groom met. On the other hand, she may want you to give a more sentimental speech. At the end of the day, the speech is designed to honor the new couple, so make sure you know if they have any special wishes regarding what you should say.

    • 3

Ask the wedding coordinator how long you have for your speech. You will not want prepare a 10-minute speech if you will only be allotted five minutes. On the other hand if you are expected to give a lengthier speech it will look odd if you stop talking after only a couple minutes. Knowing how long you will need to speak for will help you in your preparations.

    • 4

Meet with the best man and find out what direction he is going with his speech. If he is planning on making everyone crack up, you may want to go more in the direction of a funny speech as well. If he is going to give a serious heartfelt speech, you may want to consider toning down the jokes in your own speech.

    • 5

Narrow down the ideas you brainstormed once you have more of an idea of the direction your speech. It will be a good idea to prepare an outline of your speech to help focus your ideas. Make sure you start with an introduction. You will want to introduce yourself and mention your relationship to the bride. Next go into the body of your speech, which will probably include some history about your relationship to the bride. Next you should mention when the groom entered the picture. End your speech on a positive note by wishing the bride and groom well and toasting them.
