Wedding cake designs & styles

It's interesting:
"The happy couple have picked a beautiful sunny day to get married. It’s perhaps a little too hot for me in this suit though, but at least I now know how Chewbacca felt filming those desert scenes."

Weddings come in all different shapes and sizes, and can be casual, traditional, modern, elegant, playful or eccentric. When choosing a cake style and design, think of a few words that you think best describe the wedding and your personality as a couple. From those few words, a wedding cake can be created to suit the needs of the event.

Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cake Browsing

    • Try different types of cake before selecting one.

The best way to learn about the various cake options open to you is to taste them at bridal shows and specialty cake bakeries, or by asking family or friends for recommendations. Browse website photo galleries to get ideas about the cake decor style that suits your needs. Print a few sample photos, take them to your preferred cake decorator and discuss ideas about the kind of cake you want. Most cake decorators have a portfolio of work that demonstrates their favorite cake styles. If the decorator's style does not suit your needs, shop around for another decorator who can adapt to your style.

    Cake Shapes

    • Round cakes are good for any type of wedding.

Cakes are available in a variety of shapes and styles- round cakes, square cakes, topsy-turvy cakes, molded cakes, cupcakes, and other cake shapes can help define the style of your wedding. Round cakes are the most traditional in style, making them suitable for any wedding. While square cakes are often modern and edgy in design, topsy-turvy cakes are curvy, off-kilter and suitable for an eccentric and whimsical wedding. Molded cakes can be designed in special shapes that represent the style of the wedding or the married couple, while cupcakes can be used to honor the individuality of each wedding guest.

    Cake Icing and Design

    • Choose your icing with the help of your cake decorator.

According to Brides.com, there are seven types of cake frosting: buttercream, fondant, chocopan, ganache, royal icing, whipped cream and marzipan. Each frosting has a different taste and texture, and will have a different result when combined with various design elements and accessories. Fondant and chocopan are dry, stiff and look like porcelain when molded to the cake, but are not as tasty as ganache and whipped cream. Despite their deliciousness, ganache and whipped cream melt in heat and need to be refrigerated. Royal icing and marzipan are used in special designs. Marzipan is easily used as a filling and an icing.

    Cake Accessories

    • Make sure that your cake's accessories coordinate well with its icing.

Incorporating fruit, flowers, ribbon, tiers and other design elements into the cake can be tricky. Some accessories do not combine well with certain types of icing. For instance, adding ribbon to a cake decorated with whipped cream would be very messy. Avoid trying to incorporate accessories that do not combine well with the chemistry of the icing.
