How to sew a wedding garter

sew a wedding garter

It's interesting:
"It was a stipulation for the wedding that the groomsmen weren't allowed to look better than the Best Man today and I'm pleased to say they have accomplished ..."

The garter toss remains a wedding day tradition. Typically, the bride wears two garters on her leg: one for the groom to remove and toss to eligible bachelors and the other to be removed on the wedding night and saved as a keepsake. Sewing your own garter can be a way to make a personalized memento for your husband while allowing you to show off your own style. By making your own, you have unlimited possibilities to create the garter you desire.

Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Ribbon
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Elastic
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Trim fabric, lace or satin
  • Embellishment(s)

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your ribbon with the tape measure to 28 inches long and cut the ribbon using your scissors.

    • 2

Measure and cut your trim to 28 inches long, also.

    • 3

Place the ribbon in the middle of your trim and use your sewing machine and thread to sew both the left and right side of the ribbon to the trim. Do not sew the ends as this is where you will insert your elastic.

    • 4

Measure and cut the elastic to 17 inches long.

    • 5

Run the elastic through the open hole in the garter.

    • 6

Fold the ends of the garter together, right sides facing, and sew the right and left side together, making a circle.

    • 7

Turn the garter right side out and use ribbon or glue to attach any embellishments, such as bows, charms or buttons, you want on the front.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Be sure to get an exact measurement around your leg so your garter fits you correctly and comfortably.
