When you think medieval, think of turreted castles, banners, shields with the family crest and romance. The wedding feast is a lavish banquet adorned with baskets of flowers. So get ready to recreate the days of Camelot for your guests.

Choose an appropriate location. An old stone church with stained-glass windows is a good choice. So is an outside garden. Consider planning your wedding to take place when a Renaissance fair comes to town. They often will have a coordinator who can take care of the details for you. Use lots of ivy, which was favored for weddings during medieval times, chunky wooden candle holders or iron candelabras. Hang banners and streamers from the trees or posts. Baskets of flowers and flower garlands add to the medieval theme.

Develop a menu around foods that were prepared during medieval times. You might not be able to find peacock or swan, which often was used during celebrations, so substitute chicken wing drummettes. Meat-filled pastries are a good appetizer. Cut cucumber slices into heart shapes for the salad, along with carrots and radishes. Instead of slabs of prime rib, think of serving slivers of prime rib on rolls with a mustard dip. Wine and beer also can be served. Medieval banquets consisted of several courses with entertainment by acrobats, jugglers and singers between the courses. And remember, forks were used only by the very wealthy.

Don't wear a white wedding gown. White gowns gained popularity with Queen Victoria, who ruled long after the Renaissance. Choose rich gem tones for your wedding dress such as amethyst, emerald, sapphire or burgundy. The style should be long-sleeved with a low-cut bodice and long skirt. Wear a wreath of flowers rather than a veil. The groom will need to be coaxed into tights, breeches, vest, long-sleeved shirt and boots.

Include herbs in the wedding flowers. Rosemary, thyme and basil are favorites. The herbs were thought to have properties to ward off evil spirits and induce good luck and fertility. Big hand-tied bouquets with rich colors complement the colors of the wedding party.
