Select the best jewel-toned paint color for your space. A highly energetic ruby red or peacock blue, for example, typically works well in the larger, common areas of the home, like the living room or library. A deeper, intense amethyst or topaz, however, often functions best when used to spice up a smaller space, such as a bedroom or bathroom.

Set up the room by removing all furniture and light fixtures before covering the floor with drop cloths. Use the painter's tape to cover any areas of the wall that will not be painted, including trim work, baseboards and vent registers.

Open the paint can, stir the paint and strain it into the bucket if necessary.

Pour a small amount of paint into the paint tray and cover the paint roller by gently rolling it back and forth on the tray. Less is more when it comes to painting with intense jewel tones- you can always add more color in a second coat if necessary.

Paint the walls with the roller, leaving the hard to reach areas for the 3-inch paintbrush. Wait 24 hours and repeat- it is always best to apply two coats when painting with darker, more intense jewel-toned colors.
