Couples planning to be married in Minnesota can choose from a wide variety of reception venues, and their ultimate choice may depend on the season. Indoor and outdoor wedding sites are available in Minnesota's largest cities, including the Twin Cities area, Duluth and St. Cloud. Most outdoor venues are only open during the summer, however, because of the state's harsh winter conditions.

1. Hotels

   • The Depot Renaissance Minneapolis Hotel (marriott.com) in downtown Minneapolis features two spaces for receptions: the Great Hall Ballroom and the Depot Pavilion. The Depot Pavilion seats as many as 1,200 guests for sit-down banquets, while the Great Ballroom accommodates 450 for a stand-up reception. Catering services are available.

     The Spicer Castle Inn (spicercastle.com) is a boutique accommodation with Tudor-style dé-cor and both indoor and outdoor reception venues. The Lakeside Gardens is ideal for a reception of about 250 guests, while the hotel's banquet hall can seat 100. Spicer Castle also features wedding cakes.

   Gardens

   • St. Paul's Como Park Zoo and Conservatory (comozooconservatory.org) hosts wedding receptions within the Major McNeely Conservatory area of the park. The Japanese Garden provides a reception space among bonsai trees and tranquil ponds, while the Excedra Garden offers views of the park's Frog Pond. Indoor gardens, such as the Sunken Garden and tropical North Garden, are open year-round.

     Operated by the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (arboretum.umn.edu) in Chaska offers indoor and outdoor garden venues for wedding receptions. One outdoor garden, the Wilson Rose Garden, accommodates 140 for stand-up receptions. Smaller wedding parties can be held in the Fireplace Room and Balcony- this room seats 90 to 100 people for reception banquets.

   Banquet Centers

   • Greysolon Ballroom (greysolonballroom.com) in Duluth features two extravagant ballrooms -- the Ballroom and Moorish Room. The elegant, 3,780-square-foot Ballroom seats 350 guests for banquets and has an adjacent lounge for 150 additional guests. The Moorish Room -- with its Moorish-style murals and mosaic tile floor -- accommodates 200 guests. Buffet catering is available.

     Located in Milaca, the Northern Lights Ballroom and Banquet Center (northernlightsbanquet.com) features two primary ballrooms, each of which seats 200 guests for reception banquets. Sit-down and buffet catering is available.

   Mansions

   • A Friend's House (afriendshouse.info) mansion in Moorhead was built in 1902 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mansion hosts outdoor receptions in its lawn area. A Friend's House supplies tables, decorations and sound system, but not catering. As many as 250 guests may attend a reception at the mansion.

     Alexander Mansion (alexandermansionbb.com) is a bed and breakfast accommodation in Winona. The mansion, built in 1886, offers receptions in halls featuring Persian rugs and antique furniture. "The Grandest of Affairs" package allows a wedding party to rent the entire mansion and host a dinner reception in the Alexander's elegant dining room.
