Cocktail parties are reserved solely for adults and those over the age of 21 because of the alcoholic drinks served. The parties are usually elegant affairs, held at night. It's also a simple way to treat your guests to an unexpected party because the idea has a somewhat retro feel. When you decide to throw a cocktail party, make your party different by giving it a theme.

   • Throw a cocktail party that also uses cupcakes. Arrange wine glasses and martini glasses around the party, placing a cupcake inside each one.    • Throw a retro cocktail party and ask guests to come dressed in their favorite retro or vintage outfits. Serve the classic martini, the manhattan, white Russians, sidecars and Tom Collins style drinks. Invest in a bartender's guide, which teaches you make the drinks and what type of glass to use for each drink. Serve each drink with a garnish, such as fresh cherries, olives, onions, citrus peels or fruit skewers. Serve with retro appetizers, including spiced nuts and pigs in blankets.
