A wedding may be an expensive proposition, depending on how formal or extravagant you wish yours to be. The average list of expenses associated with traditional weddings include the cost of the reception hall, including food and entertainment, photographers and videographers- entertainment costs- the bride and groom's clothing as well as that of the bridal party- invitations and postage- and flowers and decor.

  1. Reception Hall

    • The largest expense associated with a traditional wedding is likely to be the cost of the reception hall. The reception hall, which can be a hotel or a venue dedicated specifically for formal events, is usually charged with wining and dining wedding guests. The venue generally charges on a per-guest basis, so it is quite easy for the cost to grow astronomically if you plan on inviting more than your immediate family. According to TheKnot.com, the reception hall can constitute up to 50 percent of the cost associated with the wedding.

    Photos, Videos and Entertainment

    • If you plan on commemorating your wedding with pictures or videos, that will need to be another cost to factor in, albeit less than the cost of the reception hall. When considering hiring photographers or videographers, determine how many professionals you need for the event and for how many hours. For example, many couples like to have photographers follow them and their parents throughout the day (i.e., as they get ready for the ceremony, etc.). Additionally, a wedding can't be a party without entertainment. Thus, it is likely that you will have to hire a band or a DJ.

    Attire

    • Although a wedding dress is something that the bride will likely only wear once in her life, it can nevertheless be a considerable wedding expense. To a much lesser extent, the groom's tuxedo is an expense that should be factored in. Other clothing costs include the bridesmaids' dresses and tuxedos for the groomsmen. TheKnot.com says that attire may represent 8 to 10 percent of the cost of a wedding.

    Wedding Insurance

    • Given the astronomical expenses associated with a wedding, many couples elect to obtain wedding insurance to protect themselves in the event something goes wrong. For example, insurance obtained through WedSafe can provide coverage for unforeseeable events such as the loss of nonrefundable deposits if a vendor goes bankrupt or fails to deliver prior to the wedding, or a sudden illness that may force postponement.
