A wedding is a very special time in two people's lives. It is a time to break free of the mundane and be creative. Express yourself with a one-of-a-kind wedding cake using a bird theme.

Things You'll Need

  • Cake (multiple tiers)

    White frosting

    Frosting utensil

    Piping bag or sandwich bags

    Icing

    Rice paper

    Images of bird(s)

    Non-toxic crayon or pencil, or edible ink pen

    Scissors

      Frost the whole cake with a base coat of white frosting. A viable creative twist to the traditional white wedding cake could be a green or blue base coat of frosting to emphasize the bird theme.

      Choose an image of a particular bird or birds fitting your specific theme, such as doves, peacocks or swans. Try to avoid too large of images. For a standard sized wedding cake, the image should be no taller than approximately 3 inches, with the option to go taller if no border icing is used, or the cake's layers are larger than a standard sized wedding cake. The width should be no longer than the allotment of the rice paper- however, one possible adaptation of this style of decorating could be to make a banner-styled image around an entire layer of cake, using multiple images, simply joining the ends of the rice papers.

      Place a sheet of rice paper over the first bird image. To conserve on rice paper, it is advisable to begin with the corners and go from there.

      Trace the image onto the rice paper using a non-toxic crayon or pencil, or with an edible ink pen. Make sure to get all the detail of the bird that is desired to be replicated on the cake. You can only ice what you can see. Try to avoid getting too over-zealous with the detail. Icing is not a hairline pen and consequently will mush together if too close of detail is attempted. When figuring out the right amount of detail to trace, try to get just the basic parts of the bird that make it identifiable. If you feel that you want to trace more in case there is room for it on the cake, then do so. Just remember, not everything you traced has to be iced.

      Cut the border of the traced image out of the rice paper with the scissors. Some excess rice paper around the borders is fine, as they will be covered by the icing.

      Place the traced piece of rice paper on the desired location on the cake. Push just hard enough for the paper to stick to the base coating of frosting, but not enough to force the frosting under and around it to jut outwards.

      Fill the piping bag or sandwich bag with the first color of icing for the border.

      Apply icing onto the traced border of the rice paper on the cake. If using a sandwich bag, simply cut off a corner opposite the zipper to pipe icing through.

      If you are using multiple colors, replace icing in piping bag (if using a sandwich bag, just use a new bag) with the new color and fill in the image. Begin from the outside of the image and move inward. Repeat until the bird image is finished.

      If you are using the same bird image elsewhere on the cake, or a different image, place a new piece of rice paper (or scraps left over from previous traces if they are big enough) over the image and repeat from Step 3. If you are using a banner-style for your wedding cake, trace the desired images onto the pieces of rice paper and place as instructed, simply aligning the edges of the rice paper to fit.

      For the top of the cake, a plastic bird cake topper or another topper of your themed bird's surroundings (such as jungle, tropical or desert) could be placed. As an edible cake topper, the same procedure for the images can be used with a picture of the bride and groom, or a much larger picture of the themed bird, to be placed on top of the last layer.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Icing sheets, frosting sheets and sugar sheets are all acceptable replacements for the rice paper.

    Images can also be printed onto icing sheets with edible ink. This eliminates the need to pipe any icing onto the cake, but can be more costly.
