Philadelphia, or simply "Philly," is known as the birthplace of American independence and as "The City of Brotherly Love," which comes from the literal translation of the city's name in Greek. Philadelphia is a metropolitan hub with unique neighborhoods and traditions and close proximity to other major cities on the eastern seaboard.

1. The Neighborhoods

   • Philadelphia is separated geographically into North, Northeast, South, Southwest, West and Center City locations. Several neighborhoods lie within each of these sections. Center City Philadelphia is home to most of the "must-see" tourist spots like the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House and the Constitution Center, which are located in the Old City neighborhood of Center City. Popular South Philadelphia spots include the Italian Market and the Philadelphia Sports Complex, which includes the Wachovia Center, where the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia 76ers play, as well as Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, and Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

   Getting Around

   • It is best to get around Center City Philadelphia by foot- however, SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority) makes it easy to get to other sections of the city. SEPTA has several modes of transportation including buses, subway cars, trolleys and Regional Rail trains that travel outside of Philadelphia as well as traveling to and from the Philadelphia International Airport. The Broad Street Line or Orange Line is a rapid transit line that runs north to south, starting at Fern Rock in North Philadelphia and ending at Pattison Avenue in South Philadelphia. The Market-Frankford Line or Blue Line runs from 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby to the Frankfort Transportation Center. The major transportation hubs in Center City are Market East Station, Suburban Station and 30th Street Station.

   Shopping

   • Shopping in Rittenhouse Square is on the posh side with international brands such as Burberry and Tiffany. Rittenhouse is also home to The Shops at Liberty Place, an enclosed mall with stores such as J. Crew and Express. The Shops at the Bellevue is another enclosed shopping destination. The largest shopping mall on the East Coast, the King of Prussia Mall, can be reached on a Route 125 SEPTA bus from 13th and Market Street.

   Dining

   • Although known for its cheese steaks and soft-baked pretzels, Philadelphia has a slew of other dining options from casual to chic. The two most famous cheese steak restaurants are located across from each other in South Philadelphia--Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks. Reading Terminal is another popular dining destination. Located near the Market East Station, Reading Terminal is home to dozens of dining options from traditional Philadelphia fare to sushi and vegetarian cuisine. For fine dining, Philadelphia offers well-known restaurants such as Morimoto, an Asian-Fusion restaurant owned by Iron Chef's Masaharu Morimoto.

   Arts and Entertainment

   • The Benjamin Franklin Parkway section of Center City includes many art museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one of the largest art museums in the country, with a collection that spans over 225,000 objects- the Franklin Institute- the Academy of Natural Sciences- and the Rodin Museum. Old City is home to several small independent art galleries and every first Friday of the month they are open in the evening and free to the public. Local artists sell their work along the streets of Old City. The Kimmel Center and Academy of Music in Center City holds many performances from ballet to Broadway musicals.
