      Mitchell's Fine Chocolates originated in 1939, when Greek immigrant Chris Mitchell, opened a small corner soda fountain and candy store in Cleveland next door to a movie theater whose customers became theirs. In 1949, Penelope joined her husband in the business. Today their son, Bill, overlooks the day-to-day chocolate-making process.

      Bill makes Mitchell chocolates in small batches for guaranteed freshness. Dark chocolate containing 52 percent cacao tempts customers as it has for decades, before the world realized its high anti-oxidant value. Two of the dark chocolate favorites are chocolate covered Australian figs and truffles. Milk chocolate covered marshmallow, in various flavors, pleases all ages as much as the milk chocolate covered nuts and bark. A special Greek collection, celebrating their heritage, combines unusual ingredients such as ouzo, masticha and Earl Grey tea.

      In 1935 Albert Malley, better known as Mike, borrowed $500, moved his young family into the back rooms of a small house and opened a candy store/deli/ice cream parlor in the front. Malley's Chocolates has been famous in Lakewood, Ohio, ever since. When customers tasted Mike's chocolate and ice cream, the word spread. Malley's second store opened in 1949. They are now a third generation of chocolate candy makers.

      Malley's Chocolates is known for handmade dark and milk chocolates with 20 distinct fillings. Sugar free and custom decorated chocolates are also available. Creamy milk chocolate covered strawberries offer a special treat on Valentine's Day.

      Malley's Fundraising program started in 1963 to assist charitable and service organizations to raise money for good causes, through the sale of Malley's chocolates.

    Bloomer Candy Company

    • The Bloomer Candy Company began in a grandmother's kitchen.

      In 1879, the grandfather of a present owner, William S. Barry, started the Bloomer Candy Company using his wife's original recipes from her home-based kitchen. Business soon outgrew space and consequently the Bloomer candy store opened in downtown Zanesville. A dozen years later the booming company built its own milk chocolate factory on 3rd Street, which is the source of all their milk chocolate today. Over a century later, many of their chocolate and candy makers are family of third, fourth and fifth generations.

      Bloomer Gourmet Chocolates are cream or nut filled in many varieties, using pure milk chocolate. Gift selections delight in every season. Favorites include chocolate covered marshmallows and chocolate vanilla cream pecan clusters.

    Aglamesis Brothers

    • The Aglamesis Brothers candy business began as an ice cream parlor.

      In the late 1800s, 16-year-old Thomas Aglamesis left his Greek home in search of money to help care for his siblings after his father died. A year after he settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, his brother Nicholas joined him. The brothers learned the trade of making ice cream and in about 10 years saved up enough money to begin their own business.

      The Metropolitan, their first ice cream parlor, opened in Norwood, Ohio with hand-churned ice cream in various flavors, which they delivered to stylish Norwood homes, earning them the reputation as having the fastest horse team in town. Soon, the brothers ventured into the candy making business and by 1913, opened their second store in Oakley, Ohio.

      The Great Depression forced the sale of The Metropolitan and their single store business became known, as it is today, Aglamesis Brothers.

      In the last decades James T. Aglamesis, Thomas' son, took over the business with help from members of the third generation of the Aglamesis family.

      The motto of Aglamesis Brothers is to make chocolates "The Sincere Way." They define this as the process of making chocolates in small batches using pure cane sugar, fresh cream, vanilla extract and other premium ingredients that have stood the taste test for nearly a century.

      Aglamesis Brothers makes chocolate-covered creams from scratch in copper kettles with a final dip in a velvet chocolate waterfall. Fruits and nuts for fillings are hand picked. Candies are hand-dipped without the addition of wax or preservatives.
