How to make a zebrapatterned cake

make a zebra-patterned cake

It's interesting:
"'I used your site to create my wedding speech. ... 'Chaps, just got to say a huge thanks for the help your site gave me preparing for my brother's wedding. As best ..."

Animal print is a basic design element that is perfect for several different types of cakes, whether you are making a cake for a children's zoo party or a stylish woman's birthday. Zebra print consists of a white background with jagged-looking black stripes. Use fondant and a couple of tools to make your own zebra stripes and apply them to your cake. You don't have to be an experienced baker to make your own zebra-print cake.

Things You'll Need

  • Cake
  • White frosting
  • Frosting spatula
  • Black fondant
  • Rolling pin
  • Scalpel
  • Zebra picture

Instructions

    • 1

Frost your cake with white icing using your frosting spatula. Make sure that your cake has cooled completely before you begin frosting it- if it is still warm, the frosting will melt and slide off.

    • 2

Place your premade black fondant onto a clean, flat surface. Use a rolling pin to roll the fondant out to about 1/8-inch thickness. Make sure that the fondant is evenly rolled out so that some areas are not thicker. The amount of fondant you will need depends on the size of the cake you are covering.

    • 3

Look at a picture of a zebra so that you have a bit of reference as to how a zebra pattern should look. This will help you when you begin applying the zebra stripes to your white cake.

    • 4

Cut zebra stripes out of your black fondant using a scalpel. The stripes should be of varying lengths and thicknesses. All of the stripes should come to a point on the ends, but should be thicker in the centers. Don't worry about creating uniform zebra stripes, as all of the stripes should be different.

    • 5

Begin laying your zebra stripes onto the center of your frosted cake. Create your design working out from the center. Vary the sizes of the stripes that you use so that you may have a long, thick stripe next to a thin, small stripe.

    • 6

Place some of the stripes so that they extend off of the edge of the cake, then trim them with the scalpel so they are even with the cake. This will make the zebra pattern look more continuous and real.
