If you want your wedding to be made of the stuff of legends, a fairy-tale theme may be just the romantic, magical approach to decorations perfect for a storybook love. Honor your knight in shining armor, and make yourself princess for a day. Use a pink-and-white Sleeping Beauty theme, or a midnight blue and silver Cinderella theme. Whether you set your reception in a medieval feasting hall or fields and forests, your goal is to create romance, magic and tradition for your wedding.

1. The Hall

   • You may want to choose your reception hall with an eye to your theme: Look for chandeliers, a dance floor and decorative touches like curtained windows and ornate moldings. Hang small metal lanterns painted white or in your wedding colors, and be sure to string up white fairy lights, garlands of ivy and silk roses. Create a medieval atmosphere with banners, tapestries, shields and thrones, or turn the room into an enchanted forest.    • You can extend the fairy-tale theme to your wedding favors, cake set and invitations. Use a cake topper shaped like a castle or tiara, and set the tables with favors like castle or slipper-shaped candles or key rings, tiny flower baskets, Cinderella coaches or knights astride their warhorses. You could even have the invitations delivered in rolled tubes, like medieval scrolls. Look for dramatic, elegant touches: Make the guest book into a "storybook" with an illustration of the happy couple as the cover, or order a swan ice sculpture for the punch table. Or get a magical effect with little cost by using paper-bag luminaries with star or heart cutouts to line the reception hall.
