Rockaway Beach, located on the Pacific coast, is about one hour west of Portland, Oregon in Tillamook County. The region, originally inhabited by the Tillamook Indians, is rich in dairy farming, commercial logging and fishing. The area provides a seaside vacation spot for visitors from around the world, with whale watching among the top attractions.

  1. Nehalem Bay Winery

    • The Nehalem Bay Winery was once home of Mohler Creamery, which operated from 1906 to 1959. In the 1970s, Patrick McCoy looked at the rundown building and had a vision of turning it into a winery. McCoy produced his first wine, blackberry, in 1974. Today, vintner Ray Shackelford, produces about 4,000 cases of wine, including the favored blackberry wine. The winery produces standards such as pinot noir, chardonnay and cabernet, pear and rhubarb specialty wines, as well as sweet honey mead. Special live music events occur throughout the year. The winery -- located 15 minutes from Rockaway Beach -- is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

    Whale Watching

    • Trained volunteers who have a passion for whales and enjoy sharing their knowledge with others staff this program. These volunteers staff 26 locations along the Oregon coast, where spectators can observe gray whales during their winter and spring migrations. Southbound migration peaks around the end of December to the beginning of January, while the northbound migration has one of its two peaks near the end of March. Summer whale watching is at its best during the months of August, September and October. During the 2010 winter-watch, 1,700 gray whale sightings were reported in a seven-day period.

    Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

    • Take a trip along the scenic Oregon coast behind a 1910 Heisler Steam Locomotive, between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach. Trips last approximately 90 minutes and run from Memorial Day to the end of September. Dinner trains run periodically from late May through September and last three hours. The trains are available for special charter trips, including birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. The railroad recommends reservations for the coast excursions and requires them for dinner train trips.

    Tillamook Cheese Factory

    • The original cheddar cheese recipe is over 100 years old and still in use today. The factory produces over 167,000 pounds of cheese daily. Take a tour of the factory and learn how the cheese is made- sample the award-winning cheese, or have a bite to eat in the Farmhouse Café-, which features recipes made with Tillamook cheese. In addition to cheese, Tillamook produces butter, sour cream, yogurt and ice cream- all 38 flavors of Tillamook ice cream are available at the ice cream counter. The Tillamook Cheese Factory is about a 15-minute drive from Rockaway Beach.
