The placing of the veil in a polish wedding

The placing of the veil in a polish wedding

It's interesting:
"Even world class comics know what it's like to die on stage, and a wedding ... Nobody wants the soundtrack of their wedding night to be a chorus of loud groans."

As Polish wedding tradition, placing of the bridal veil is the last task that the bride's mother performs for her daughter before she is a married woman. The veil represents the bride's innocence and carefree life, and so it seems fitting that the bride's mother should be the one to bestow this symbol upon her.

  1. Placing of the Veil

    • Before the bride and her mother part for the beginning of the wedding ceremony, the bride's mother places the veil on the bride's head. After this takes place, an usher escorts the mother of the bride down the aisle and the father of the bride escorts his daughter down the aisle. He then lifts the face of the veil to present the bride to her groom.

    The Wedding Crown

    • The custom of weaving a wedding crown for the bride is particularly prevalent in rural Poland. Days before the wedding, the bride's friends weave a crown of rosemary for the bride to wear on her wedding day. Rosemary symbolizes remembrance, and the bride wears the crown to show that she will never forget her friendships.

    Removal of the Veil

    • When the bride enters the reception venue, the unveiling ceremony begins. Guests stand in a circle around the couple and the bride's mother removes the bridal veil, representing that the bride is now a woman. She then replaces it with a lace head covering called a czypek. Also at this time, a silly hat is placed on the groom's head to symbolize the hope that the couple's marriage will be filled with laughter.

    Transfer of the Bridal Veil

    • After the unveiling ceremony, the bride's mother passes the veil to the maid of honor. She then dances with the best man while wearing the veil before passing it off to the next bridesmaid. This chain of transfers continues until the veil reaches the flower girl. Because the bridal veil is supposed to bring good luck to those who wear it, it is hoped that the girls will all be as happy as the bride is when they marry.
