Things to do outdoors in vegas

Things to do outdoors in vegas

It's interesting:
"I know it's Catherine and Stuart's wedding day, but all week I've only been thinking about what might have been … We were this close to a British ..."

Las Vegas is known more for its indoor activities, such as gambling, fine dining and major production shows, but the area has plenty of outdoor activities for visitors as well. From sports to hikes and more, you have plenty of options in the vicinity. Just make sure you drink plenty of water if you spend much time in the desert heat.

  1. Golfing

    • Many visitors like to hit the links when they're not gambling. You can check your clubs on the plane if you have a carrying case or rent clubs at the course. Top golfing destinations in the area include Angel Park Golf Club, Bali Hai Golf Club, Black Mountain Golf & Country Club and Las Vegas National Golf Club. Greens fees range from $60 to $170 at most courses.

    51s

    • The minor-league baseball team in Las Vegas plays at Cashman Field near downtown. Named for Area 51, an Air Force base and nuclear test site in the desert north of town, the 51s play a regular schedule April through October. Visit lv51.com for more information.

    Red Rock Canyon

    • About 20 miles west of Las Vegas is a site where 19th-century travelers stopped to quench their thirsts in the springs that run out of the mountains. Take the 13-mile scenic drive, which has many stopping points with short hikes, including one that allows a close-up view of the rock walls that give the canyon its name.

    Valley of Fire

    • This state park about an hour north of Las Vegas is a vast expanse of red sand dunes and strangely shaped rock formations. It also contains a scenic drive with plenty of hikes, and a museum gives an overview of the history of the area.

    Lake Mead

    • About a half-hour southeast of Las Vegas is this 1.5-million acre lake that was created by the construction of nearby Hoover Dam. The recreation area surrounding the lake is a popular destination for water-lovers. You can rent ski boats, personal watercraft, fishing boats and more at the Lake Mead Resort and Marina. You can rent a houseboat at sevencrown.com.
