How to decorate a cake like a snowflake

decorate a cake like a snowflake

It's interesting:
"I know it's Catherine and Stuart's wedding day, but all week I've only been thinking about what might have been … We were this close to a British ..."

Creating a snowflake cake gives a baker a magnificent canvas for embellishment. Best of all, the guidelines for this cake are loose, which allows you the creative freedom to personalize it. Sketch the intended pattern for the snowflake before you begin decorating. You want the cake to be balanced - piping such an elaborate pattern might be difficult if you do not plan ahead of time. The design should consist of lines radiating from a center point. Those lines should be accented with a series of smaller lines in patterns of your own design.

Add this to my Recipe Box.

Things You'll Need

  • Prepared cake batter
  • Round cake pans
  • Frosting, light blue and white
  • Platter or cake stand
  • Offset spatula
  • Piping bag and decorating tips
  • Edible glitter and pearls

Instructions

    • 1

Bake and thoroughly cool the cake. Prepare the frosting while the cake cools. Keep some of the icing its natural white color for the flake itself. Mix another batch of colored frosting for the background. Light blue is a classic choice. You can also mix colors for accenting the flake. Lavender or a metallic color would look lovely in the design.

    • 2

Assemble the cakes as you ordinarily would. Frost the entire cake in the background color by apply frosting with the offset spatula.

    • 3

Pipe your snowflake design onto the cake. Use white frosting and a round or flat decorating tip on the bag. Do not use a star-shaped tip as the ridges will make the snowflake shape harder to distinguish. Pipe one giant snowflake taking the points of the snowflake all the way to the edge of the cake.

    • 4

Sprinkle white edible glitter or sanding sugar over the top of the cake. Accent ends of the snowflake with edible decorating pearls.

    • 5

Pipe a standard border around the base of the cake or further decorate the sides. Pipe small snowflakes all around the edge, if desired.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Trim the edge in straight lines around the cake to better blend the background and snowflake.

  • Bake in a star-shaped baking pan for an even more snowflake-like shape.
