- Smooth, flat chocolate bar
- Wax paper
- Cheese slicer or vegetable peeler
- Toothpick

Choose a smooth, flat chocolate bar to shave. Allow refrigerated chocolate to come to room temperature, so it is pliable. Place the chocolate bar on a piece of wax paper.

Position a sharp handheld cheese slicer or vegetable peeler at the top of the chocolate bar. Apply firm pressure as you slide the slicer or peeler down the block of chocolate- the chocolate will curl as it is sliced.

Make small curls by running the slicer or peeler along the corners of the chocolate bar. Create larger curls by running the tool across the bar's flat surfaces.

Arrange the delicate chocolate curls on the top of your frosted cake. Place them around the edges as a decorative border, or cover the entire surface with chocolate shavings. Transfer the curls from the wax paper to the cake using a toothpick, as the warmth from your hands may melt the chocolate.
