As of 2010, it is nearly impossible to get a bona fide hotel room for under $30 per night in Tampa, Fla. However, if you book ahead on-line and don't mind staying in a place with basic facilities and a somewhat less-than-plush neighborhood, it is possible to find a decent motel or bed and breakfast accommodation for close to $30.

1. Surburban Extended Stay Hotel

   • Located close to the Tampa International Airport, nightly rates at this hotel begin at $50 per night, according to its website. However, if you need a place to stay for a week or longer, rooms are available starting at $31 per night. All rooms have well-equipped kitchens, table and chairs, Wi-Fi access, free local calls and cable television. There are laundry facilities on-site and rooms are serviced weekly. Busch Gardens Africa theme park, Adventure Island Water Park, Florida Aquarium and Honeymoon Island State Park are popular attractions all located minutes from the hotel by car.

   Gram's Place

   • Gram's place is a quirky, friendly hostel style property situated in the center of Tampa in Historic Tampa Heights. The buildings are two old Tampa cottages and the property features quaint walkways, porches, and two courtyards with waterfalls. Rooms are themed by music genre and jam sessions are encouraged. However, the hostel is still suitable for families with children. Both dorm and private rooms are available. In 2010, dorm beds were priced at $23 per night. Private rooms with en-suites start at $25 per person, per night. There is an outdoor swimming pool on site. The hostel is within three miles of historic Ybor City, The Cruise Ship Terminals, Raymond James Stadium and Lowery Park Zoo.

   Motel 6

   • Two branches of Motel 6 are an option for travelers on a budget in Tampa. One is located in Tampa East, the other downtown. The standard room rate for two people at Tampa East is $35.99 per night, while at the downtown location it is $33.99. At both locations children 17 or under stay free when occupying the same room as their parent or caregiver. Both locations offer free coffee, local calls, cable television and operate a coin laundry facility. Wi-Fi is available at $2.99 for 24 hours. Reviews on travel website Trip Advisor state the hotels are located in down market areas and reviewers did not always feel safe.

   Rodeway Inn

   • The Rodeway Inn is another conveniently located, cheap Tampa motel. It is less than three miles from the Busch Gardens Africa theme park and the University of South Florida. As of 2010, double rooms start at $35.71 per room, per night. Free wireless Internet access is included, as is a daily continental breakfast. Rooms have en-suites, free local calls and cable television. Some have refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, hair dryers, irons and ironing boards but these are more expensive. The hotel has an outdoor pool and a bar.
