Wedding ceremonies are romantic and fun but can be solemn and quiet, and that can be difficult for small children who want to squirm and make noise. The reception can also be tricky for little ones who get bored or overstimulated at the grownup party. If you bring small children to a wedding, consider making a wedding busy book to keep them occupied and quiet while you enjoy the wedding.

Make a Wedding Busy Book

Download free coloring pages for them to color. Find a wide variety of interesting pages at websites such as Crayola, Crayola.com/free-coloring-pages, or the homepage for your child’-s favorite television show. Good examples can be found at PBS Kids, pbskids.org/coloring/index.html, or Nick Jr., nickjr.com/printables/index.jhtml.

Create an “-I Spy”- type page with lots of items for kids to find. If they find everything on the list, they can earn a sticker or a small prize. Examples for them to look for: A red dress, white flowers, someone with facial tissue. You can also create a collage with pictures that you cut out from magazines and then provide a list of items for them to find in the collage, such as a paper clip or an orange. Another idea is to download actual "-I Spy"- pages and include them in the wedding busy book. Find them at Scholastic.com/ispy/games/index.htm.

Give them a sheet of stickers and a few blank pages to decorate with the stickers. You can create themes, such as love, or give them letter stickers and see how many words they can create on the blank pages. You may need to remind them that the stickers only go in their wedding book, not anyplace else, such as on the church pew.

Make a game page with tic-tac-toe squares and hangman games drawn in and ready to go. They can play with each other or with you, but remind them they will need to whisper if doing the games during the ceremony. Create your own coloring page. Draw a picture of things they know and love, such as your pets or house. If you’-re a pretty good artist, you can try something more dramatic, such as a stencil page or calligraphy for them to trace or color. Print your pages and staple them together, or you can punch holes in the papers and put them in a three-ring binder.

Load up on a variety of crayons, pencils and markers (preferably washable). Place them in a container that can be closed and opened repeatedly. Some three-ring binder include a plastic envelope that can be opened and closed and is good for crayons and markers.
Tips &- Warnings
You may want to bring a goody bag for the kids that includes small toys, snacks and a couple of disposable cameras to play with and take pictures. If you will be attending an outdoor reception, consider creating a scavenger hunt for older kids to play or bring a small kite for them to fly while the grownups are busy socializing.
If you are bringing more than coloring pages and snacks or would like to try a more complex activity for the children, check with the bride and groom to make sure they are OK with any potential distractions.
