Catholic wedding liturgy checklist

The Catholic wedding ceremony is a Mass that comes from the "Missale Romanum," the last authoritative version of which the church revised in 1884. Because the ceremony has many parts, a checklist is a clear way to keep track of the elements of the liturgy you need to address. The checklist can also be used to divide these duties up between the bride, groom, wedding planner or anyone else assisting in the plans.

1. Readings

   • The first part of your ceremony comes directly from the Bible.

     You will need to pick out readings for your ceremony. Your church may have a list of popular readings to choose from, but usually you can pick anything from the Bible that you find meaningful. You need to have a reading from the Old Testament, a reading from the New Testament and a Gospel reading.

   Prayers

   • The other prayers you select add individuality to your ceremony.

     Your church may have a list of some common choices for prayers. You need to pick a Responsorial Psalm to be said or sung between your first two readings, Wedding Vows, a Blessing of Rings, a Prayer of the Faithful that can include petitions for family members or friends, a Nuptial Blessing, a Post Communion Prayer and a Final Blessing.

   Ceremony Participants

   • Your friends and family add to the enjoyment of your day.

     You will be asked to assign some of the ceremonial duties to friends or family. You will need lectors to read your Bible passages, gift bearers who will bring the Communion to the priest and musicians including singers and instrumentalists. You will also need Eucharistic Ministers and Altar Servers. If you do not know anyone already trained to perform these tasks, the church can find people for you.

   Music

   • Music selections need to be representative of your faith.

     Certain songs will be part of your ceremony no matter what, such as the "Alleluia" before the Gospel. You may select the music for some sections of your ceremony, however. You will need music before your ceremony, a Processional hymn for entering the church, a Presentation hymn for when the gifts are brought to the priest, a Communion hymn for when guests are receiving Communion and a Recessional hymn for exiting the church.
